The Eels sent a powerful message by focusing on the future and the players who would be there next year, but then they went out and bought Jonah Pezet for one year. Now, with Luai, the club is again prioritizing short-term wins over long-term planning. In my opinion, this strategy is risky and could lead to a lack of cohesion and development in the team. The Eels have two talented young halves, Lincoln Fletcher and Lorenzo Talataina, who aren't ready yet to play in the NRL. But to me, this sounds more like a good excuse. Why aren't they ready now? It's the third year in a row they have done this, and I know the Brown situation was different. But in my eyes, it just reeks of them wanting to win now instead of really wanting to build for the future. The Eels' decision to sign Luai also raises questions about the message it sends to their most important player, Mitchell Moses. Are you really telling him we wanted to trial someone different in 2025 because Brown wasn’t going to be here, then we wanted to bring in a kid who had played only 10 first-grade games in Pezet and then in 2027 we are going to get another player for you to have some success with but then in 2028 we are going to bring in a new rookie who you have not played any games with to partner you in the halves? If I’m Moses, I’m saying thanks but no thanks. This situation shows Moses is a very loyal player and unfortunately he is the one who is going to have to shoulder the responsibility to develop these players. Developing young halves is not linear. It’s up and down. So the fact they want Moses to mentor a new half in 2028, maybe two, it’s good PR but it doesn’t make much sense — both for the club and Mitch’s own aspirations. One thing that immediately stands out is the contrast between the Eels' strategy and the Roosters' approach to Daniel Tupou. The Roosters made a selfless decision to play Tupou on the left wing, which allowed him to become a really good yardage carry winger. This decision perhaps best sums Daniel Tupou up.
