2026 Tony Awards: 'Schmigadoon!' vs 'The Lost Boys' - Who Will Win Best Musical? (2026)

The 2026 Tony Awards nominations have been announced, with 'Schmigadoon!' and 'The Lost Boys' leading the way with 12 nominations each. Both are new musicals, with 'The Lost Boys' based on the 1987 campy vampire thriller film and 'Schmigadoon!' based on the Apple TV series parodying Golden Age musicals. The two shows are up for best musical and direction, alongside nods for Ana Gasteyer and Sara Chase in 'Schmigadoon!' and Shoshana Bean and Ali Louis Bourzgui in 'The Lost Boys'. The revival of 'Ragtime' followed with 11 nominations, followed by Arthur Miller’s 'Death of a Salesman' and 'Cats: The Jellicle Ball' with nine each.

In addition to 'The Lost Boys' and 'Schmigadoon!', 'Titanique', an Off-Broadway hit that reimagines Titanic as told by Celine Dion, and 'Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York)', a two-hander rom-com about two strangers running around New York, were also nominated for best musical. The category left off possible contenders, 'Beaches' and the Kristin-Chenoweth led 'The Queen of Versailles', which ended its run early this winter, in a slim year for musicals.

The best play nominees are 'Balusters', centered on the escalating grievances of a suburban Homeowners Association; 'Giant', centered on a book review written by Roald Dahl that some see as antisemitic; 'Liberation', fresh off of its Pulitzer Prize win and centered on a feminist group in the 1970s; and 'Little Bear Ridge Road', about an estranged aunt and her nephew reconnecting during the pandemic.

'Cats: The Jellicle Ball', 'Ragtime' and 'The Rocky Horror Show' all received nominations for best revival of a musical, while 'Chess', starring Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher was left off the list. Chess cast members Christopher, Hannah Cruz and Bryce Pinkham all received noms, with Michele missing the nod.

Among the Hollywood names receiving nods, Daniel Radcliffe was nominated for his role in the one-man show 'Every Brilliant Thing'; Rose Byrne was nominated for her role in the comedic revival of 'Fallen Angels'; Nathan Lane was nominated for role as Willy Loman in 'Death of a Salesman'; John Lithgow was nominated for his role as Roald Dahl in 'Giant', after winning the Olivier award for the role last year; Carrie Coon was nominated for her role in the paranoid thriller 'Bug'; and Alden Ehrenreich was nominated for his role in the acerbic play 'Becky Shaw'.

Pink will host the 79th Annual Tony Awards on June 7 at Radio City Music Hall. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and stream on Paramount+, starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
